Maya is 11 years old & she is just
finishing up her sixth grade year of middle school. She was diagnosed
with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on October 12, 2012 and has about 3
months left of her frontline treatment before beginning maintenance
treatment. It is a long, difficult haul and our whole family has learned
the meaning of counting our blessings. Maya has been known as a "Strong
Girl" since her treatment started--we gave her that tag name on her
Carepage & it has stuck, and her motto is the words of a Bob Marley
song that she had learned just prior to getting sick "Everything little
thing is gonna be alright". Throughout the arduous treatment, she has
attended school whenever possible, maintained straight A's, continued to
dance whenever her body will allow her & persisted in her passion
for fashion designing. Maya's family, friends, school & community
have been amazing supports and at times, Maya is the one that keeps
everyone else going. She shaved what was left of her hair to raise money
for St. Baldrick's and ended up being the top fundraiser in a shave
event with over 900 participants (she raised over $7,000). There are
hard days, but she finds a way through them and is so compassionate for
other children going through the nightmare of cancer.
