Meet Sophia

On January 8, 2013 Sophia (3 years old) was being seen for flu like symptoms at Seton Hospital. When she arrived the doctors examined her and noticed that she was very pale and her liver was 3 times the size it should be. Shes always loved to be outdoors and hosting tea parties with her dolls. Our family began to worry because this was Sophia's first visit to the emergency room. Sophia was then transported to McLane Children's Hospital in Temple, TX. Upon arrival, Dr. Kane ran many test on Sophia. They determined that she was experiencing mild heart failure and admitted her to the PICU floor for further testing. Results showed from the blood work ran that her red cells, white cells and platelets were extremely low. Her HGB was at a 2, when children her age averages a 12 . To raise her blood levels doctors began giving Sophia 5 blood transfusions. It was very hard for her father and I to see her in this big hospital bed not interacting with siblings nor other family members. Two days later, Dr. Kane stated her blood levels were good to perform a Bone Marrow Test. That evening the results came back showing she had developed Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and that it spreaded 70% within her. I must say the blood transfusions were a miracle and it saved my daughters life. She is doing much better and we will continue to stand beside her through this long journey.
